New Record of FDI in China

January 14, 2017

According to the report released by the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development on 1 February, the flows of global foreign direct investment (FDI) in 2016 were about $ 1.52 trillion, down 13%. In the world, especially in Asia, FDI inflows dropped significantly, while in 2016 China's foreign investment maintained steady growth, with an increase of 2.3% over the previous year, reaching 139 billion US dollars, indicating a new record.

The latest issue of the Global Investment Trends Report released by the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD) shows that China ranked the 3rd in the world's top 10 foreign capital inflowing economies in 2016, after the United States and the United Kingdom. Moreover, the structure of China's use of foreign capital continues to be optimized.

Foreign investment in services, especially in the high value-added services and high-tech manufacturing, continued to grow, with foreign investment continuing to shift into capital- and technology-intensive industries and high value-added areas, and continuing to shift away from labor-intensive industries.

The United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD) predicts that, China's economic growth will continue to remain at a relatively higher global level in 2017, its industrial structure will continue to be upgraded, and that the market-oriented foreign investment is expected to remain on the rise. At the same time, with the deepening of China's foreign investment management system reform, China should further widen the field for foreign investments. This will inject a new impetus into foreign capital inflows, and China will continue to be one of the most attractive destinations for foreign investment. In 2017 the attraction of foreign investment should still remain at a high level.

According to the report, FDI inflows in the developed economies declined in 2016, but the economies were in big contrast in this aspect. The total FDI inflows into the advanced economies declined from a record high of 2015 by 9 % to about $ 872 billion. The FDI inflows to the United States increased from $348 billion in 2015 to $385 billion in 2016, up by 11 %.

Driven by the large cross-border M&A transactions, the FDI inflow in the United Kingdom increased from $33 billion to $179 billion, with a nearly 6 times increase. In 2016 the sum of cross-border mergers& acquisitions in developed economies increased by 21% to $779 billion. Under the influence of cross-border M&A, the growth of equity investment is generally strong, while the fluctuation of cross-border borrowing within the transnational corporations of the developed economies has brought a downward pressure on FDI flows.
